9.30Kevin Sheedy AM
Kevin was the coach of AFL club Essendon, and a former player for Richmond. He holds the AFL record for the most games combined as a player and coach.

Sheedy was the quintessential self-made player. At his peak, he was a supreme big-game performer who epitomised the "kill or be killed" attitude of the Richmond club.

After his retirement, he commenced a coaching career with Essendon that endured through several eras of the game. Sheedy is an innovator whose ideas shaped the modern style of Australian football coaching, taking it away from the hard training style and into the realms of a science.

In 2007, he parted ways with the Essendon Football Club ending 27 years as Essendon senior coach. In his last home game in charge (against Richmond in Round 21) at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, a mammoth crowd of 88,468 people turned out to farewell the great man Sheedy and James Hird. After Essendon lost a closely contested match, Sheedy received a standing ovation as he left the fi eld for the last time. Join the session to hear Kevin's inspirational and motivational presentation, linking the parallels between his success as a leader and coach and business and the workplace.

Mr Kevin Sheedy appears by arrangement with Saxton Speakers Bureau

MORNING TEA
11.00AIRFREIGHT FORUM

2009 is set to be a difficult one for the Airline Industry. We have already seen a long standing freighter carrier leave the Australian market. Both passenger and cargo loads are expected to drop during the year. Airlines will have some tough decisions to make regarding such things as capacity, routes serviced and frequency. How will these decisions effect our industry?

Richard Pierse, Chair of the Victorian Airfreight Council will lead a panel of Airline senior representatives to discuss these and other issues in what shapes to be a thought provoking session. Topics will also cover the increased focus of Melbourne as a future dedicated freighter hub and the role of new generation aircraft to handle the cargo task. We will discuss the necessity to constantly innovate in the area of loose freight handling and ask how does CCTV assist with efficiency and the claims process.

Presenters and Panellists:

Stephen Cleary, General Manager Commercial Freight, Qantas Airways
Vicki Park, Regional Cargo Manager Australia, Air New Zealand
Allan Hine, Cargo Manager Vic, Tas, SA, Cathay Pacific Airways
Lil Valente, Property and Freight Manager, Melbourne Airport

2.00 INGREDIENTS FOR INNOVATION IN AN ECONOMIC DOWNTURN
"In today's turbulent climate, most organisations are desperately trying to fi nd ways to cut costs, in order to survive. However, Jonar Nader says that cost-cutting is simplistic and thoughtless. He points out that clever organisations will be those who can fi nd innovative ways to review client relationships, reduce wastage and improve quality- all within the constraints of a global economic downturn. No doubt many organisations will suffer. The big question is, what are the survivors doing? What are the secrets that they deploy to stay ahead? We will hear about sad business failures and we will see exceptional performers. What are the ingredients that will separate the winners from the losers? In the future, what will be more important than your bottom line? Of all your assets, which two will be the most important and most valuable for survival and growth in the modern world?

Jonar, a very popular presenter at AFIF2007 will return to re-invigorate your thinking to develop solutions to many of the issues facing industry today, including maintaining staff morale and improving service in this unique, competitive marketplace."

Jonar Nader, Author, Journalist, Lecturer, Philosopher, Futurist, Consultant and a Corporate and Social Warrior

09.30INSIDE STORIES FROM BORDER SECURITY – AUSTRALIA'S FRONTLINE

Lyndal Marks, Series Producer, Border Security, Seven Network or Evan Wilkes, Senior Producer, Border Security, Seven Network

Taking viewers behind-the-scenes of Australia's Immigration, Customs and Quarantine departments, BORDER SECURITY - AUSTRALIA'S FRONTLINE is fl y-on-the-wall television at its best. With compelling, emotion-charged stories and real human characters, it was the must-see show on television last year.

The growing popularity of BORDER SECURITY - AUSTRALIA'S FRONTLINE has meant its cameras have become a familiar sight at our airports. Filmed with the full cooperation of Customs, Quarantine and Immigration, Seven's crews are granted full access to all areas of national security - not just at our airports, but in our coastal waters and mailing centres. The cameras are always in the thick of the action, capturing all the suspense, drama and emotion of life on the frontline.
10.15AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMS - AN EXPANDED ROLE AND SOME FAMILIAR ISSUES
Michael Carmody, CEO, Customs and Border Protection Service, Australia

In a move to widen and strengthen their role, Australian Customs has a new name and revised purpose.

As part of their new role a major focus will be on tackling the growing and most serious issue of people smuggling.

Customs will also provide an update on the impact of the new U.S. laws on cargo screening to be introduced progressively during 2009 and 2010.
  • How will the Customs transition occur and what effects will the increased focus on people smuggling have on cargo reporters and brokers?
  • What new requirements will Australian forwarders have to implement to meet the stringent new U.S. cargo screening laws ?
  • Other developments with potential impacts for Australian forwarders.
