I am pleased to advise that Port of Melbourne Corporation's (PoMC's) Annual Report for 2012-13 was tabled in the Victorian Parliament on 19 September.
The Annual Report and the media release from Minister for Ports David Hodgett are now available to be viewed on our website.
Trade performance
Total trade through the Port of Melbourne recorded a modest decrease of 1.6% over the previous financial year to 85.6 million revenue tonnes (35 million mass tonnes).
Total container throughput of 2.51 million TEU declined marginally by 2.6% from last year's strong growth of 7.8%. Despite a high Australian dollar throughout most of the trading period, full international container exports were resilient and recorded an increase of 0.6%.
New motor vehicles grew 3.6% to 370,527 units while dry bulk and liquid bulk trades also recorded positive growth increasing 4.4% and 2.6% respectively.
Financial performance
PoMC recorded an overall profit after tax of $65.9 million for 2012-13 through prudent control over operating costs in a period where trade volumes were below forecast.
Capital expenditure
PoMC's overall capital expenditure of $56.8 million on port infrastructure included works for the Port Capacity Project which is progressing well, extensive wharf rehabilitation at Appleton Dock, together with upgrading the Port Operations Control Centre (formerly Melbourne VTS). The installation of a covered walkway and taxi canopy at Station Pier were also completed ahead of the cruise season.
The development of marine and landside port infrastructure has been a hallmark of PoMC which has invested over $1 billion since the organisation came into being a decade ago.
Cruise shipping
There were 55 cruise ship visits during 2012-13, bringing around 180,000 passengers and crew to Station Pier which is now busier than at any time in its history in terms of visitor numbers.
I commend the Annual Report to you as a document which assists in capturing the extent of our collective achievements in benefiting the prosperity of south-eastern Australian businesses, regional producers and the wider community.
Yours sincerely,
Stephen Bradford
