The Annual AFIF Charity Golf Day, held at the Macquarie Links Golf Club in Sydney on Thursday August 18th, was attended by 135 Freight forwarding industry members, sponsors, celebrities and guests and raised over $20,000 for Australian Youth Against Cancer (AYAC).
The outstanding amount was raised through the sale of Raffle tickets, Auction items and games on course during the day. Prizes were also donated by many high profile industry suppliers and organisations. AFIF again invited the entertaining Scott Gibbons, aka: 'Mr Sold' a high profile auctioneer to conduct the auction and raise as much as possible through this process.
This year, a humbled Mick Cavanagh and his team from Stockwell International took out the main Ambrose golf competition, winning first place, with Mike Rolls team from Manton Air and Sea Runners-Up. Third place went to Vince Aloschi and the team from Savino del Bene. Congratulations to them and all the combatants! The happy team Captain for the winners, Mick said "this is amazing, we did not expect to win but we are very happy! AFIF did a great job arranging this event".
The Sponsor of the Year Cup was awarded to Cyberfreight, for their continuous high level sponsorship. In collecting the Trophy, a delighted Tristan Meuross representing the company added that "they were always ready and willing to support this high profile and worthwhile industry event".
AFIF had been informed about the need to highlight the gap in assistance for a 'middle' group, who do not receive the level of support that children and the more senior members of society do for cancer treatment. Chris Boyd, founder and head of AYAC gave a presentation outlining the formation and work of the charity, including some of their fund-raising activities - one of which was a Kayaking adventure travelling the length of the Murray River.
Chris, a 22 year old Law student started the charity in 2010 following treatment for a rare form of cancer was also interviewed on the day for a 2 page spread in the Daily Telegraph, following his nomination for Young Australian of the Year 2012. Chris was delighted with the support for the charity provided by the members of AFIF and their service providers "We are so grateful for your help and support, this will make a huge difference" said Chris, in closing.
Over the past 7 years AFIF have run the golf days to aid charities which have affected their industry colleagues in some way. In the brief history of the event, more than $158,000 has now been raised for various Charities.
"We are very happy to host this great day as long as we continue to receive the support. Despite our concerns about the continuing drag on the economy, it's great to see that companies are still willing to be generous to charity, even in such difficult financial times.' Said Jim Merrigan, Chairman of the Golf Day Organising Committee for AFIF.
AFIF wishes to thank the generous sponsors and all the players and companies who supported this annual event, which continues to provide much needed charity funding and a great social networking day for our industry!
We will be posting photos of the day on the AFIF Web Site and at our new Facebook page very soon.
Thanks and regards
