image The year ended strongly with both import and export airfreight
surging above their trend lines, particularly imports which had been severely
depressed during the financial crisis. As usual, Sydney and Melbourne
dominated the airfreight markets although Brisbane seems to be increasing
market share steadily. Exports for the month of December actually fell on the
previous December when we had seen an extraordinary peak in exports of
perishables through Melbourne. However airfreight exports for the full
calendar year rose 17% from 130 000 to 153 000 tonnes. Brisbane did well with
meat exports putting in a strong performance. Imports for December 09 were nearly 30% higher than the
previous December result with imports reaching 35 000 tonnes for the month.
Overall though the year was well below 2008 with falls in imports of
machinery, appliances, cameras & instruments. There were small increases
in imports of perishables including seafood, fruit and vegetables. |
