We refer to a notice issued by CMA CGM in regards to their decision not to charge GST on international import charges. Please refer attached notice.
Along with other industry associations, AFIF continues to meet with the ATO under the banner of the Australian International Transport Service Providers Group (AITSP) to obtain clarity in regard to the determination of the place of consignment and the effect on GST in regard to this decision. This ongoing work is sponsored by Tradegate.
AFIF has queried the notice issued by CMA CGM, with the ATO, as to its accuracy in regard to any specific ruling. In a general sense this should not effect your decision to impose GST upon local Australian import handling charges to consignees domiciled in Australia.
We will advise you as soon as possible as to any clear determination on the outstanding issues in regard to the application of GST in relation to these matters.
Please await further advice and advise all concerned.
Thank you and regards
