IMMEDIATE RELEASE 26 AUGUST 2008
The Australian Federation of International Forwarders (AFIF) held its annual Charity Golf Day on Monday 18 August to raise funds for Diabetes Australia- NSW. The day was a complete success with 32 teams competing and more than 150 guests in attendance. Through auctions, raffle, sponsorships and team registrations we were able to raise more than $23,000, which was well over the initial target amount.
On the day we were joined by special guests Lance Thompson and the Diabetes Australia-NSW team. Liz Peers, CEO of Diabetes Australia-NSW was thrilled to be able to participate in the golf activities and spoke at the evening function about the work that the charity does for the sufferers of Diabetes and their families. Lance Thompson, former Sharks player, was diagnosed with Diabetes only last year and at that time decided to retire from NRL. Thompson spoke very honestly and straight from the heart about his experience with Diabetes and how the disease affects sufferers on a day-to-day basis. Thompson was joined on the day by former teamates, Sharks players Kevin Kingston and Luke Covell; their team went on to win runner-up in the tournament.
The winning team was team two from Freight Central. The team's participants were Gavin Farrell, Manuel Perez, Brad Hansell and Danny Minogue. All of the teams were very competitive and the scores were impressive, but the team from Freight Central was just too good on the day. With great on-course activities as well as a dinner following the tournament, all participants had a most enjoyable day. We were also lucky enough to have some fantastic prizes and items to be auctioned which were donated by Air Pacific, Air NZ and Hawaiian Airlines just to name a few. AGS Worldwide was named the inaugural winner of the "Sponsor of the Year" award for its generous donation of two 84 cm LCD TVs and the entry of a team to participate on the day.
Brian Lovell, AFIF CEO was extremely pleased with the event stating "This is the best turnout we have had of all of our Golf Days so far. We hope to make this a bigger and better event year on year."
Simone and Michael Peychers were also in attendance as it was for their little boy Kurt, aged 4 who was diagnosed with Diabetes late last year that AFIF had chosen to support Diabetes Australia-NSW. AFIF and The Peychers would like to thank all participants and sponsors for their generous contributions. Days like this really do make a difference and it’s a fantastic way to get our industry members involved.
